It's a type of insurance that not everyone thinks about, but life insurance could well be one of the most important types. It helps to ensure that if you pass away, your family will be financially protected.
Passing away is not something anyone likes to think about, but if you have a family that depends on you, getting insured could be an extremely important move.
There is more information on life insurance here but in the meantime here's a quick guide to how it works.
How it works
The way your life insurance works depends on the type of insurance you choose. There are two main types:
Term life insurance
This type of life insurance lasts for a fixed period of time (e.g. 25 years). If you die during this time, your family will receive a payout. However, if you pass away after this time they won't be entitled to anything.
Whole-of-life insurance
As the name suggests, this type of life insurance lasts for the rest of your life. Because the insurance company is almost guaranteed to have to pay out, a whole-of-life premium is likely to be more expensive than term life insurance, and you may have to keep making payments for the duration of the policy. Some whole-of-life policies will stop charging after a certain date, however.
Will it cost much?
The overall cost of life insurance depends on a range of different factors. Apart from the type of insurance you choose, the cost of your premium will depend on things like age, your current health, whether or not you smoke, and so on.
Whatever the cost, life insurance could be extremely helpful to your family if the worst does happen.
